Six months

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

Kaylee,
You're 6 months old. Meaning, in 6 months, you'll be a full year. Where has the time gone? With all the 1st birthdays I've been to in the last year, I'm starting to think I need to start planning your party now! I'll refrain though. I really hope to have a down to Earth, simple party that lasts maybe 2 hours. The three 3-4 hour parties with bouncehouses and a ton of people are exhausting for me as an adult. One lasted SIX hours! I can only imagine how they are for a little child. I'd rather not torture you too much... yet. :)

While November was a slow month for development for you, December has been rockin' right along.

You'll now sit unassisted for several minutes playing with a toy.

You grab for toys while on your belly. Holding on to toys now is no problem. And if I put you on your boppy, you'll crawl over it to get your toys. I did figure you'd be crawling by now and now you are making some more progress towards that. You almost flipped over from your back to your stomach several times. I just think you aren't sooo interested in your toys that it's a big draw for you yet.

You've found your feet and have figured out that they fit nicely in your mouth.

We also started solids this month - that's been... fun. You hate rice cereal. Love avocados. Dislike sweet potatoes.

My favorite development though is that you blow raspberries on me. It is the cutest thing! Hopefully, I'll have my video camera within reach one time you do it...

Christmas was INSANE. Everyone did very well as far as getting you small things we could store easily. I was really nervous we'd get a ton of big things. Where would we put it??? The facial expressions you showed were truly priceless though.

Here's hoping I can scrap more soon... and I need to get started on your digital book.

Starting solids... Kill me now...

So, my doctor has pretty much told me twice in the last week that I'm starving my child. Nice. She eats on demand. She's happy. Her belly and cheeks are full and round. She's developing - some milestones faster than others, some she's behind on. Regardless, she's following my growth pattern when I was a baby.

Still... I'm apparently not doing enough. Thanks for the awesome guilt trip, doc. This past week was spent agonizing over everything. Unfortunately, everything I tried was refused. To me, this is a sign that she is not hungry. But, still.. I'm trying. Because the last thing I need is for him to report me for starving my baby.

Kaylee hates rice cereal.

I must have tried 5 times yesterday to get her to swallow any of it. She would just spit it back at me. Today, I gave up on the cereal. I'm not going to force something that is that gross. Have you ever tried that junk?? Ugh. I tried avocado. And she liked it well enough that she at least ate most of it. There's a start.

She has 2 weeks to get back to the 4% in weight or lord only knows what the doctor is going to do to me. I am taking ammo in with me on January 3rd though. MY stats. And per that, she is doing EXACTLY what I did at this age. And, I was on solids - by 5 weeks, at that. I'm almost positive, based on the pictures that I was also on formula.

I'm not going to feed her formula. I don't think she needs it. I'm already mad that I'm giving her solids before the time I wanted to. But again... who am I? Oh right.. just the mother.

To Teethe or Not to Teethe

Thursday, December 16, 2010

That is the question. One I'm still not certain of the answer. Three days ago I was checking out Kaylee's gums because she has started to bite me (video to come soon). I figure, well.. she must be teething. Lets check it out. I can see where her gums are more white where her two front teeth should appear one day. Two days ago, I'm just being obnoxious and check her again. This time I find this:

My first thought was WTH? She shouldn't be getting a cuspid now! It also looked very high. I promptly send the image to my grandmother, mother and MIL. My mom writes back and says it looks more like an Epstein/Bohan pearl.

Because I'm no doctor and have gotten in trouble with Mr. Google before, I decided just to take her in. It wouldn't hurt.......

I will later eat those words.

Yesterday, we had an appointment at 8:20am. I showed him the pearl and he agreed - it was a harmless cyst. But, he's concerned about her weight. Especially, since she stopped sleeping through the night all of a sudden (a month ago, but I refrained from telling him that). She weighs a whooping 11lbs 9.4oz. Meaning, since her four month appointment a month and a half ago, she's only gained 7.4oz.

He asked if he could run some tests just to make sure nothing was going on. I said "Sure." He checked for an ear infection - negative. Then he wanted to check for a UTI. How the heck do you get a baby to pee in a cup, was honestly my first thought. Then my mind came back to reality and it dawned on me - they would have to cath her. UGH.

Negative for UTI. Oh no, but there's more... let's rule out an infection. That requires a blood sample.

By this point, Kaylee was so frustrated she would start screaming, then stop... scream, then stop... Two hours later, he basically tells me that I'm not feeding her enough. That my supply must be low and that I need to talk to a lactation consultant.

Whatevs... I tried his suggestion of giving her a bottle after I fed her. And guess what! She, who does not refuse a bottle unless she is not hungry, REFUSED THE BOTTLE. Three times.

The child is not hungry. She's just petite.

The lesson of this story? Don't take a baby in for suspected teething, as you may end up putting them through a battery of tests only to be told you are starving her, when you really aren't.

Five Months

Kaylee... Kaylee... Kaylee...

Five months. Five long yet short months.

I know I'm late on this post, but things have been a little nutty. The month of November was somewhat quiet. To the point where I'm almost concerned. You were learning a new trick almost every month, but last month you just kind of stalled. I figured for sure that you would be turning over from back to tummy, but you just stopped trying. I also figured you would be closer to crawling, but again, you just stopped trying. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - I don't think anyway, but it was kind of sad to me. I was hoping you'd be crawling by Christmas. The pictures I envisioned taking would have been so cute! I'm still holding out hope though. You seem like you could take off at any moment. But, this also gives me a little extra time to finish getting the house baby proofed.

You are killing me slowly though with this whole not sleeping thing. Ever since the time change, you have just been off. Lately, though you have woken up in the middle of the night and then for good by 4:45 or 5. Momma is TIRED. I, myself can barely stay up past 9 or 10. I'm hoping this doesn't become the norm. I don't function well like this.

On top of the not sleeping through the night and not learning new tricks, you've also become very clingy. You have to be held. While standing. Sitting is not cutting it for you. At Thanskgiving, you weren't wanting to go to many people, which just isn't like you. But, it was loud. And there were a ton of people around. I'm almost not looking forward to Christmas since it'll be louder with your (almost) deaf Grandma and Papa.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, we all went down to RenFest. You weren't liking your stroller much, so I got to carry you everywhere. 11 lbs of cuddly (although sometimes dead weight) baby for 6 hours. Needless to say, my back was killing me Sunday.

Ugh. This post seems so negative, but it is what it is. I'm tired. I need a maid. And a nanny.
